I will start off by saying the LA400 is a good product - Have had it working on my gate for 7 years. It can be finicky and temperamental at times. It is expensive to have serviced and repaired (professional installation/repair runs $100+/hour plus trip charge) which brings me to the biggest problem I have with this product: the manufacturer, Liftmaster/Chamberlain, will not help the homeowner with this product at all. If you are handy and tend to troubleshoot and fix things yourself, be forewarned you are 100% on your own with this product, even when brand new, unless you can find a helpful blog somewhere that addresses whatever issue you are having.

I have never experienced anything like the support call I made to Liftmaster about a problem I was having with a brand new, out of the box, LA400 opener arm I got to replace the old arm (the gears had stripped out and wouldn't open). It was a simple replacement - took me literally less than 5 minutes to do, but the new arm wouldn't open and caused the alarm to trigger on the control board whenever I attempted to open the gate.

I called the manufacturer and the first thing the support rep said was, and I quote: "Do you have your product manual in front of you? On page 2, it says we are unable to help anyone but a professional installer." I tried to reason with the guy that the problem was most likely simple, but he said it was against company policy to help the end consumer (WTF - this is a product that is made specifically for residential use and you won't help the homeowner). He told me to call a professional Liftmaster repair person out of the phonebook for help, and then hung up on me. I called back and got the same response from another phone tech - these are Liftmaster employees responding to a customer like this!

Anyway, after several hours fiddling with the settings, I was able to solve my problem, but this is a perfect example of something the manufacturer could have helped me solve quickly if it weren't for their ridiculously stupid support policy.

Liftmaster is more than willing to take our money for their products (this one on Amazon is $799; I forked over $400+ elsewhere for the one I bought), but then refuse to help when we have a question or a problem.

Don't think this would never happen to you - this gate opener is temperamental as I said at the beginning - so you will need assistance with this product at some point.

So think ahead and be aware of what you are getting into before you buy this product!
