Kovacs P1092-631 Bling Bang 4 Light Foyer Pendant, Chocolate Chrome Review

I have a lot of trouble picking light fixtures. Either they are too plain, or too sparkly, or too mass-produced-looking. I like things that are distinctive. That people will remember and notice! Lights, switch plates, handles, etc. are like a room's jewelry to me! I usually end up looking online at hundreds and hundreds of lights to try to find one that fits my needs, is different, and isn't thousands of dollars.

Anyway, this light fit the bill perfectly. The shape is more modern, but the colors are traditional enough that it works in an older home. I live in an older (1920s) home and have copper accents in my kitchen. And right now, the copper stuff is all "farm" looking stuff...and everything else is bronze or stainless. I don't like those! The colors of this match very well. And..it has SPARKLES!! I love love love sparkles. These are subtle enough that you don't think "chandelier!" when you see it, but they are a perfect accent. The crystals themselves are a honey color, not clear--another distinctive feature.

It was very nice that the downrod came in pieces. You can use just the shortest rod...which is 6 inches (so it is almost a semi flush fixture rather than a pendant,) or a combination of it plus the included 12" rods all the way to 60 inches. All the descriptions I saw on the internet have this at a minimum of 24 inches. You can go shorter (mine is a 12" rod only plus the height of the drum...about 6 for a total of 18 down from the ceiling.) It also comes in 5 and 6 light versions if you want a wider drum. I don't know the what downrods are included with those.

It was simple to install. The ceiling cap piece is sort of shallow, it isn't going to forgive very well any junction box that isn't flush or too much wire shoved in there. My box is NOT flush, so there is a tiny gap between the cap and ceiling, but it is close enough that it doesn't matter. Some caps are deeper, not this one. The bulbs are normal, regular bulbs with a standard base. I LOOKED for this feature because I dislike having to have a box full of different or hard-to-find bulbs. You could certainly use fluorescent bulbs, but you MAY see them slightly through the crystals. The bottom is translucent, so that part wont matter.

The bulbs sit horizontally in the fixture (kinda like a spider or plus sign) which I love. I know that sounds like a stupid thing to care about, but when they sit upright, the light is directed mainly toward the ceiling. I need light in my kitchen below, not so much the ceiling. This 4-light fixture casts close to as much light downward as my old chandelier with 12 (yes, twelve) arms where the lightbulbs sat vertically up.

I did have a little bit of trouble aligning the screw that holds the bottom glass diffuser. There is a hollow threaded bolt that where one end turns into the light and then the glass goes over, then the little brown circle under that. If your screw isn't twisted in enough, the glass sits too low. If it is screwed in too much, the brown circle cap won't catch. I SHOULD have checked this before I was standing on the ladder, but I didn't. It wasn't hard, just annoying to try to put on, then off, then on, etc. all while balancing the glass diffuser in your hand. I plan on changing the bulbs from the TOP so I don't have to take it off too often.

TIP: If it gets dusty in there (or you see the silhouette of a dead bug...which is one thing I dislike about many pendant lights...this one included) you can use that canned, compressed air to blow it out. I do that sometimes right before I vacuum and mop. It is just easier to reach up and push a button rather than climbing on a ladder to clean the inside. The chocolate chrome does show finger prints, so just be careful when dusting/installing to wipe them off while you are still on the ladder!

I really love it and got the matching pendant. Very beautiful light that isn't the same old thing you see in every kitchen. And the price is very reasonable for a "designer-type" light.
