Back in the 1950s, a flashlight was pretty much a 2 D cell Ray-o-Vac or EverReady, all metal, with a tungsten bulb, putting out maybe 15 lumens on a good day with a fresh pair of carbon-zinc batteries. First came halogen bulbs, CR123 lithium batteries, and them LEDs. The RRT-3 is the latest in this trend with three high output Cree X-ML LEDs pumping out 1950 lumens at its highest setting. It size and shape is similar to the Ray-o-Vac, it has batteries, a switch, and a metal body, but that is where the comparison ends. The light has many strong pluses such as a tank-like build, a ring-adjusted output control, and a very useful 5 lumen low setting that is great for indoors, especially if you don't want to disturb others. So how bright is 1950 lumens? 1950 lumens is at the upper end for most automotive headlights, although the flashlight concentrates the light in a narrow cone, considerably increasing its brightness and throw. A household 100W tungsten light is rated at about 1600 lumens, spread however over nearly 360o. By focusing the beam over a few degrees of arc, the RRT-3 is probably 30-40 times brighter. At its highest output its center beam can throw over 350 yards although it has a 'corona' of spill around the center and some flood. This level of brightness really is meant for large unpopulated areas; if you live in a city, any $15 LED will work just fine. As a bonus, the RRT-3 has a rapid variable frequency strobe that is disorienting just from its reflection. If you shine it at someone, it will probably temporarily stop them. Just make sure that you have confirmed their hostile intentions first!

The RRT-3 can take CR123s (6) or 18650s (3). I have heard that there is a tight fit for some high output 18650s but it fit my Ultafire BRC3000s (18.6mm, length 68.9mm; 2400-2600 mAh) just fine.

My only quibble is that my light was a kit with the rail mount and handle, which facilitates long-term carrying. The set screw that holds the rail mount in place has is a bit hard to align with the dimple on the light so the protective metal cup popped out. Neither the seller nor JetBeam seemed too excited about this and told me to glue it back in. Nevertheless, this is a $325 flashlight that should have better warranty service.
