Toshiba Full HD 1080P Outdoor Dome Network Camera IK-WR14A Review

I know many people out there have difficulty installing and setting up Network Cameras, and bash the vendor because they simply don't understand how to do it correctly.

I have been using Toshiba Network Cameras since 2004 and have 3 running continuous since 2004 without one issue. That is 9 years straight in the sun, rain, and ice.

This year, I decided to upgrade my cameras to newer technology. It is obvious sensors have improved since 2004.
I choose this camera because Toshiba gave me such outstanding trouble free value over the years.

The IK-WR14A is a great camera! High Def with very good FPS even in low light.

Install:
You will need a Power over Ethernet device to run power to the camera, I use a TRENDnet device, and it works flawless.
Basically everything comes ready to install, even a template for drilling!

I took down my old camera and had my new camera up in 30 minutes, but if you never had a camera installed, you will need to plan your installation a bit more, determine how many cameras u need and choose a common entry point for your ethernet. The logical choice for my home and number of external cameras meant I needed to route all through the west corner of my house, so running 200 feet of RJ45 and using a Power over Ethernet device was no problem, buy a switch if you plan on having more that one IP camera, The switch must have the correct number of POE ports, 4 cameras, 4 POE ports.

The Toshbia camera has three basic parts, the base which attaches to the house, the housing which attaches to the base and the outer shell which attaches to the base. It all comes with the necessary tools to make the work go fast, p.s. the tools specific to he housing, so don't loose them.

Your one challenge is findiing a location to attach the base and drilling holes, you will need a drill!! or very strong wrist with a screwdriver. I installed mine using a power drill and deck screws, Because I needed 2 inch easement, I cut two simple 6.5 1/4 lumber, painted it, and used 4 inch deck screws. Everything was down hill from that point.

The camera arrives with dry wall screws, thus if your trying a simple flat install you should have all the hardware you need, I still recommend a power drill.

Once installed, and using good quality RJ45 and a POE, your new camera comes to life. Toshiba includes simple software for finding the newly installed camera, and walks you through the basic set up.

Software:
Once Installed, You have basic software for the enjoyment and configuration for Motion, alarms, SMS etc. Nothing robust, but usable. I recommend finding a Third Party package such as BlueIris for better enjoyment.

Performance:
Very Good. The camera is semi wide angle, has 3 zooms, and 4 digital zooms and covers an area of 1920 x 1080.
The camera has open source capabilities, and allow multi video streams all at once. Stay with me on this!
This means you can set up the camera using your supporting software to have different views: all using the same camera based on the maximum 1920 X 1080 frame, allowing you to zoom and pan within that area. Thus, you can set up one view zoomed in a hot spot , another one wide and have two camera views all from the same camera. Hard to explain.

The camera allows recording locally using SD cards or point it to a network drive, again I recommend BlueIris software.

At this very moment, I am watching 8 children on skate boards go up and down the street where I live in low light at 12 FPS.

LowLight: not the best in the world but gets the job done! The IR leds are located inside the dome and reflect back to the lens causing some ghosting. Your mileage may vary, I have lights on the front of my house and don't have too much a problem. It would be best if the camera had external IR.

To clarify the PTZ features; These ePTZ cameras allow you to establish a zoom, and set it. Optical zoom is not intended for realtime surveillance, it is intended to allow you to set a fixed coverage area for the camera, and digitally pan zoom within that area.

In summary, this is a very robust camera, and makes a significant improvement over cameras of yesteryear as I have. I am loving it..
