Ecosmart US Smart POOL 27 Electric Pool Heater Review

I bought this water heater for my 18000 Gal concrete pool from Warehouse Deals (Amazon) in January 2013. The installation is straight forward. I do recommend not cutting corners and getting the wire and breaker size they ask for. This thing does use a lot of power so you DO need 3x 50Amp breakers and three runs of (Red/Black 220 Volt) #8 Cable. Get #6 for longer runs. If your house does not have a 200Amp main breaker, stay away from this model.

The water heater looks amazing, very modern and "eco-smart", however the case is very flimsy when open, and the design does not protect internal components properly from water and humidity. The 2" intake and exit port pipes you see on the pictures got rust spots the third day after installation. The case itself is powder coated but is made out of "regular" steel and it will rust quickly. I can already see rust signs on the bottom corners where the screws that hold it to the floor, as is expected, scratch the powder coating while mounting it.

Having said that, the heater works very well and so far it does heat my pool from 70 to 85 in about 14 hour using a Pentair variable speed pump on speed 2 ( about 1500 rpms ). It does not use 27KW the entire time, what is does is that it tries to maintain a 7 degree difference between the water going in and the water going out. It has 3x 9000 Watts heating elements and they each have their own 50 Amp breakers and cable run from your panel. They work independently depending on the amount of water flowing. Once you reach a temperature less than 7 degrees from the SET temperature, the heating elements start to turn off and once you reach the temperature you want, only one element turns on from time to time to keep the water at your set temperature. This will vary depending on how much heat loss your pool has.

The heater seems to be easy to service and the heating elements are very easy to access and replace if one of them burns. My solution to the rust was a spray can of an outdoor clear coating I bought at Home Depot and covered the entire thing from every angle, buttons, screws, everything. By blocking the contact of all metal parts with water and oxygen, I hope to delay the rusting process. I would love for Eco-Smart to make this thing out of stainless steel or aluminum, even if they had to increase the price a bit. The inside is made of stainless steel but I do not know what grade and how well it will stand to a salt water pool.

I've called the company multiple times since purchased to ask if I can buy a heating element to keep as spare, 60 days later I still have not been able to speak to a human. I would not trust their claims of warranties.
I do not expect this heater to last more than 5 years, but by my calculations even if i have to buy one every five years, it is still less expensive than spending $3000 or $4000 on a heat pump that will not last 15 years either. Also this thing is completely silent, compact, and it looks good.

I have been turning the heater on every Friday afternoon and keeping it on for the entire weekend for two months now and my electric bill only increased by $120/month. Not bad! (In average the temperature increase needed has been about 15/20 degrees ( from around 70 to 85/90. I do recommend a solar blanket if you want to keep the heat a bit longer, because the pool drops from 85 back to 70 in one night!! (Average air temperature has been in the low 70's for February and March in Miami)

I give this heater 4 star, understanding that it is not a product that will last very long and that the company behind it does not have support or a warranty you can trust. (I knew this going it from other customer217;s reviews).
It does heat up an 18000 Gal Pool in the time they estimated and it does work as long as you have the proper power requirements (again 150 amp main will not do, 200 Amp minimum).

I will update this review in a few months. Hope this helps.
