Eccotemp 40H-NG Outdoor Gas Tankless Water Heater, 135,000 British Thermal Unit Review

****************10-month FOLLOW UP ADDED TO THE END OF THIS REVIEW*************

Installed this unit recently to convert from a tank to tankless water heater system.

The unit came packed in an amazon box that was way to big for the original manufacturer's box inside. this allowed the original box to slide all over during shipment and upon delivery the package looked "roughed-up" When i removed this outer "amazon" box the manufacturer box was still in tact and in perfect condition. Opening up the packaging, everything was in place and protected with styrofoam, accessories were all accounted for and nothing was missing.

I opened the front panel of the unit to check what was inside and found everything well fastened and fitted well for the unit's size. I also wanted to see what they were using as a thermal protection from freezing as this unit is supposed to protect down to -30. i saw lots of little ceramic heaters placed all around the water pipes in and out of the heat exchanger fastened with a durable-looking metal clip. all the remaining wiring was tied off to the side and everything looked very clean and professionally done.

I installed this unit as per local codes and the instructions. The unit was easy to install (after all of my plumbing modifications to accept the unit) and the unit started right up the first time with no problems at all.

some things i noticed upon start-up is the lack of noise, this unit is VERY quiet. i expected to hear when the unit powered up and expected exhaust and steam to be flying out of the exhaust vent on the front of the unit. I got neither of these symptoms. the unit is barely audible, and the flue gasses and steam gently float out of the front of the unit.

The control panel seems a bit cheap. by this i simply mean that it feels super light and just has a cheap feel (not sure if i can really explain what cheap feels like but some people will know exactly what i mean) but, this did not affect performance thus far and the panel started right up with the unit as well and is functioning properly. the unit came pre-set to 120 degree water temperature. This was pretty accurate as i measured 112.6 at the furthest faucet (about a 35-40 foot run in a semi-heated crawlspace during winter) with a digital gauge. The temperature drop at this faucet is not the fault of the heater as this faucet pipe crosses into a "cold" section of crawlspace before going through the floor into the kitchen. another faucet at about 30 feet reads 121.3 degree water.

this unit has so far operated flawlessly without having to do anything at all to "make it work". i turn on the hot water tap and it delivers. I have not yet seen any condensation buildup on the outdoor walls near the unit but we have only been using it a few days and the outside temperature has been fluctuating above and below freezing. if i run into any problems related to outdoor weather and/or freezing temps i will follow-up on this review. so far i am happy with the price paid for this unit as it was about the same as a 50 gallon tank heater i was considering.

10 month follow up------------------------
After 10 months of operating the unit has run into many problems. some with the control panel which would require resetting roughly every other day, breaks in the stream of hot water (meaning that the water would be flowing , like in the shower, and then out of nowhere the water would turn ice cold for about 30 seconds for no reason, no other water was being used in the house, the temp wasn't changed, just a cold spot in the stream.

The biggest problem was the unit had been freezing up even though our outside temp was still in the high teens to low 20's and eccotemp claims its heater circuit protects to -30. the first unit i installed ruptured a heat exchanger pipe making the unit unusable. called eccotemp and they said that my pipes froze and caused the burst. I explained and took pictures to show them that my pipes were heat taped and insulated until entry into the heater, when i opened the filter fitting just before the water enters the unit, liquid water came shooting out, my pipes were not frozen. Then they stated well then you must have blown a fuse to the heater circuit inside. again i verified and the fuse was in tact. then they simply claimed it was an "act of god" and refused to help unless i would replace the unit. well at this point we still had no hot water so i was forced to agree, they offered a refurbish price on a used unit for 275 then i paid 125 for 2nd day air shipping to get it to me. the replacement unit was a bit banged up, meaning visible scratches, some of the screws were stripped and some semi-stripped and other cosmetic issues but it was a refurb unit so i understand that.

the swap out went well. the new unit started up but this one makes more noise than my original one, the eccotemp tech said it was still normal. a week later the newly installed unit froze again, this time however, i had the water trickling on an inside faucet to relieve pressure in the lines to help prevent rupture, as i was skeptical of its ability to protect to -30 at this point. after thawing slowly with a low torch the unit began operating again. I called eccotemp and left a message on 4 occasions as well as numerous emails to find out if they could repair my original unit. I never received a reply. another month after that the water was still trickling in the house but the unit froze again, this time rupturing the heat exchanger in at least 2 places. called up eccotemp again, told them everything that happened, spent 7 hours outside in the cold swapping parts with my original unit with no luck. i had to wait an extra day to talk to the tech again because it was Sunday, Monday morning i got an email from eccotemp saying that it was an "act of god" and asked me if i wanted to replace it again. and a second email that said my support ticket status was changed to resolved. i replied saying it was NOT resolved and that i still had no hot water. the next day another email stating that my ticket was closed. i never heard from them again.

To point out again, their heater circuit does NOT protect the unit down to -30. you can get as low as about 20 before it freezes up.

Needless to say i called a plumber and had the unit disconnected and installed a new water heater NOT made by Eccotemp. the old one is currently still hanging on the back of my house, just till spring when i can get it removed and thrown away.
