JetBeam Raptor RRT-3 XM-L LED Flashlight - 1950 Lumens with rail mount and handle Review

Back in the 1950s, a flashlight was pretty much a 2 D cell Ray-o-Vac or EverReady, all metal, with a tungsten bulb, putting out maybe 15 lumens on a good day with a fresh pair of carbon-zinc batteries. First came halogen bulbs, CR123 lithium batteries, and them LEDs. The RRT-3 is the latest in this trend with three high output Cree X-ML LEDs pumping out 1950 lumens at its highest setting. It size and shape is similar to the Ray-o-Vac, it has batteries, a switch, and a metal body, but that is where the comparison ends. The light has many strong pluses such as a tank-like build, a ring-adjusted output control, and a very useful 5 lumen low setting that is great for indoors, especially if you don't want to disturb others. So how bright is 1950 lumens? 1950 lumens is at the upper end for most automotive headlights, although the flashlight concentrates the light in a narrow cone, considerably increasing its brightness and throw. A household 100W tungsten light is rated at about 1600 lumens, spread however over nearly 360o. By focusing the beam over a few degrees of arc, the RRT-3 is probably 30-40 times brighter. At its highest output its center beam can throw over 350 yards although it has a 'corona' of spill around the center and some flood. This level of brightness really is meant for large unpopulated areas; if you live in a city, any $15 LED will work just fine. As a bonus, the RRT-3 has a rapid variable frequency strobe that is disorienting just from its reflection. If you shine it at someone, it will probably temporarily stop them. Just make sure that you have confirmed their hostile intentions first!

The RRT-3 can take CR123s (6) or 18650s (3). I have heard that there is a tight fit for some high output 18650s but it fit my Ultafire BRC3000s (18.6mm, length 68.9mm; 2400-2600 mAh) just fine.

My only quibble is that my light was a kit with the rail mount and handle, which facilitates long-term carrying. The set screw that holds the rail mount in place has is a bit hard to align with the dimple on the light so the protective metal cup popped out. Neither the seller nor JetBeam seemed too excited about this and told me to glue it back in. Nevertheless, this is a $325 flashlight that should have better warranty service.

My Jet dust collector came with a bag that only filters the air to about 30 microns, which actually discolored the walls around the collector. This filter canister leaves the air in the shop much cleaner than it used to be. It's also very easy to keep clean - just rotate the handle a few times and the dust cakes fall into the collection bag below.

Also, the description did not mention (at least when I ordered it) that it comes with 5 plastic collection bags as well. The combination of these accessories collects more dust than ever before and keeps the shop a lot cleaner.

Tormek SJ-250 Japanese Waterstone Review

I received a Tormek Sharpening System for Christmas and I added the ultra fine Tormek SJ-250 stone. The regular stone does a great job. When I use the ultra fine Japanese water stone with wood chisels they are amazingly sharp and they work better than when using the standard stone alone. Surprisingly with knives, I find they cut a little better with the standard stone. Perhaps the standard stone leave microscopic ridges and they work like a serated edge, I'm not sure.

Bottom line, if you want the ultimate sharpness, this is the ticket.

Foredom M.TX-TXR 1/3 hp TX motor and TXR speed control Review

I've had a smaller version of this tool and this 1/3 HP version is amazing. Enough torque to make the motor jump around on its hanger if you give it full power. Almost impossible to slow down significantly even with 3/4" diameter burrs. In fact I haven't been able to stall it.
Really nice variable speed foot controller. You can control the speed with great precision.
And it is so quiet compared to air tools!

2" Portable Electric Pipe Threading Machine Threader Review

The motor is loud so I've been using ear-muffs. I can see if I was doing this all the time every day that a Rigid unit would be a better investment but my 30 to 50 times a year fits the bill. I did read reviews from this product and similar on other sites. A couple of REAL important things to watch when you get it is to first inject the planetary with grease as it states in the instructions and probably run it around as you do it. It only comes with a small amount of grease from the initial assembly. Second make sure you insert the die the correct way or you will be putting all the torque on the unit in reverse which the ring and pinion are not designed for. Last, I read that someone had the threads running all over the place. I could see it if either he started it on the high side of the die,which can happen or the dies were loose or one broken. I threaded 2" and with that being the highest torque value it is necessary to stop and reverse to not allow the burrs and shavings to bind. Average time to thread one 2" end is 5 minutes. The smaller diameters of 1" or less it will pretty much go right through. Happy threader at this end and the object of envy from my piers while they are trying to hand thread a job. " No,you can't borrow it. Stick a crowbar in your wallet and buy your own".
