3.0 Gallon GMC SYCLONE 3010 Ultra Quiet and Oil-Free Air Compressor Review

Let's start with the bad:
a) I was disappointed that a GMC machine would have alternate language translated into English labels. This to me means it was designed and manufactured NOT in the U.S.A. which is what I would expect from a company the US government just bailed out of bankruptcy.

Things like "Being sure allowance for opening of nothing water rusting evenly" gibberish. Ripped those off - buu bye.

b) One of the legs had suffered an extreme impact. I had to use a large piece of steel and heavy hammer to bend the pipe back into round so I could put the rubber foot on. Better packaging with emphasis of protecting the bottom of the unit would have prevented this shipping damage.

c) The quick connect was the biggest piece of junk ever. Getting it to release is difficult. Getting it to hold the hose connector, difficult. Leaked A LOT unless the hose was perfectly aligned which isn't always easy with a hose filled with 90 lbs of pressure. Watching the hose self release after being attached for two days and fly across the floor and getting my ears blasted to bits with the concussion of the air rushing out of the hose was the last straw.

For $1.90 and a trip to the hardware store I replaced it with a high quality quick connect valve and tossed the GMC valve in the recycle bin. All I can say is this was a ridiculously cheap connector.

d) The release valve started leaking after I used it the first time. I took that off and found there was a small metal pellet, about the size of the head of a needle that had gotten in between the two surfaces of the valve. I cleaned it out by turning it on with the valve still removed and it blew a couple more little pellets out. After that I haven't had any problems with the release valve leaking.

Now for good stuff:

a) This is a very quiet machine. I can be in my 16 x 20 shop listening to the stereo at moderate level and this comes on and I can barely even hear it. By comparison air blasting the dust off my bench is probably three times as loud as the compressor!

b) This has one of the fastest recharge times of any compressor I've ever used, which is good because it's a small unit. And that's the main advantage of it. Small and Quiet.

c) It's good enough pressure and a quick enough recharge time for finish work and dusting, and being that I make guitar amps and cabs in a small shop, that's exactly what I needed.

I have a 20 gallon oil compressor for any bigger jobs. It's also quiet, but big as a cow and just about as heavy - not the kind of thing you can use in a small shop like mine.

d) For a sort of ugly duckling appearance, the look kind of grows on you after a while.

e) It's easy to carry. As in I'm 5'6" and 55 years old with a back problem and I can just whisk it off the ground with zero pain.

Synopsis:
Overall I'm very happy with the performance of the unit, but a bit disappointed in the quality control, and the foreign language translation was just an extension of the lack of attention to small detail.

For the price I guess this is what you get. This is a fantastic deal if you're handy enough and willing to make an upgrade and repairs like I mentioned right out of the box. If not, *surely* you have a friend like me that will happily come over and help you and share a six pack. Hey, works for me!
