I was sanding the decks on a 26' speed boat and the hose coming up over the side of the sheer plank from the floor was catching and irritating me endlessly. I was decided that at this late stage in my career I deserved a little more dignity in the work arena so I ordered one of these babies. It's done all I could ask of it. Like all Festool stuff it's well thought out and designed and it goes together easily enough. You've got to order the handle to make the thing work which is an additional expense but it makes moving the vacuum a more pleasant experience and i wish I'd had one on there these last ten years I've owned my CT22. Also, part of the system includes a tubular bracing component that might be necessary if you boom off the back of the vacuum. It's ungainly if you want to move the vacuum around the shop and not necessary if you use the boom off the front of the vacuum. You can take it on and off easily enough, so I leave it off and standing by in the unlikely event I ever need it. This product will improve your life. Also, it just looks cool.

LiftMaster LA400 Residential DC Linear - Gate Operator Review

I will start off by saying the LA400 is a good product - Have had it working on my gate for 7 years. It can be finicky and temperamental at times. It is expensive to have serviced and repaired (professional installation/repair runs $100+/hour plus trip charge) which brings me to the biggest problem I have with this product: the manufacturer, Liftmaster/Chamberlain, will not help the homeowner with this product at all. If you are handy and tend to troubleshoot and fix things yourself, be forewarned you are 100% on your own with this product, even when brand new, unless you can find a helpful blog somewhere that addresses whatever issue you are having.

I have never experienced anything like the support call I made to Liftmaster about a problem I was having with a brand new, out of the box, LA400 opener arm I got to replace the old arm (the gears had stripped out and wouldn't open). It was a simple replacement - took me literally less than 5 minutes to do, but the new arm wouldn't open and caused the alarm to trigger on the control board whenever I attempted to open the gate.

I called the manufacturer and the first thing the support rep said was, and I quote: "Do you have your product manual in front of you? On page 2, it says we are unable to help anyone but a professional installer." I tried to reason with the guy that the problem was most likely simple, but he said it was against company policy to help the end consumer (WTF - this is a product that is made specifically for residential use and you won't help the homeowner). He told me to call a professional Liftmaster repair person out of the phonebook for help, and then hung up on me. I called back and got the same response from another phone tech - these are Liftmaster employees responding to a customer like this!

Anyway, after several hours fiddling with the settings, I was able to solve my problem, but this is a perfect example of something the manufacturer could have helped me solve quickly if it weren't for their ridiculously stupid support policy.

Liftmaster is more than willing to take our money for their products (this one on Amazon is $799; I forked over $400+ elsewhere for the one I bought), but then refuse to help when we have a question or a problem.

Don't think this would never happen to you - this gate opener is temperamental as I said at the beginning - so you will need assistance with this product at some point.

So think ahead and be aware of what you are getting into before you buy this product!

INCRA LS52-TS TS-LS Table Saw Fence 52-Inch Range Review

I purchased this fence after watching the videos on using this system and reading reviews from people. I think the installation instructions could be a little clearer. A few places were a little hard to follow. Once I got it set up and zeroed to my blade I tried a few generic cuts. When I set this thing for 4 inches I get a 4" wide piece of wood unless I let it drift from the fence during the cut. If you are wanting to make things as precise a possible you need to get one of these. If you are just wanting a good quality fence to do some general cutting this is a bit over-kill. You can get a complete Delta fence for just under $200 on Amazon that will work just great. I am a little beyond hobby level wood working so this fence is doing what I want. I like it and I would recommend it if you are trying to be precise. I specifically wanted a 52" fence so this is what I was going to purchase but just before I made the purchase I was downloading user manuals from the Incra site and learned that the 32" fence will do a 48" cut if the guide rails are adjusted properly. I was going to get the 32" but its the same price as the 52" so it would have been silly to buy the 32. Lastly, the fella that gave the poor review and went back to his Unifence. Understand something, he apparently has plenty of money to make expensive purchases and not use them. I think he is predisposed to liking his Unifence. Don't get me wrong, the Unifence is a wonderful fence and I would love to have one. For him that fence does what he needs. That doesn't mean you will feel the same way. Franke RGX160 Regetta Offset Double Bowl Undermount Kitchen Sink Review

This undermount sink has graced my remodeled kitchen for 10 months. It receives light, everyday use so far (I'm still doing more remodeling and organizing than major food prep but it's evident this sink will be able to handle lots of activity).

On the plus side, you know with Franke's stainless sinks that the build quality is superb: sturdy, thick gauge construction with superbly polished finishes. This model's deep basin provides ample room for washing cookware - or hiding tall tumblers from view! The shallower basin is wonderful for scrubbing produce and performing many other tasks.

If I had had a higher budget, I may have opted for a sink that supports sliding rinse trays and cutting boards. (This is not that sink.) Yet: clean lines, ergonomic shape, generously sized basins, great build quality - these were exactly the features I needed - and this model satisfies all that.

Franke will happily sell you as many high-priced accessories as you can afford, of course. So far: I didn't order any, nor did I need them. The supplied basket strainers are more than adequate to task. The small tube of Franke Inox Creme that shipped with the sink is an amazing product that quickly lets you attain a high-finish lustre.

Beyond that: educate yourselves about stainless steel sink maintenance. Use no bleach. Don't allow acidic foods or products to remain in contact with the finish. Wipe down excess water rather than letting it stand. Clean with gentle, non-abrasive products designed specifically for stainless. Less burdensome than, say, my previous cast iron sink's care. Just very different.

Downside - not Amazon's fault nor the reselling supplier's, this is Franke's fault: the factory sealed carton was stupidly packed so its separate mount hardware nestled inside the beautifully finished basins - and movement during shipping allowed this hardware to abrade permanent scratches into one basin. Dumb choice! The factory could easily have packed those pieces to face the sink underside, instead. So: it arrived with small, permanent scratches in the basin. With a tight remodeling schedule, I had to choose: Keep? - Return and hope I get a replacement on time - and hope the factory packed it right? Decision: I kept. Now I'll always live with the needless, small abrasions. Only I know it's there, no one else looks that closely. But now, you know, too.

That's the only caveat. Beyond that, I recommend. I love it.

Makita 1912B 7.5 Amp 4-3/8-Inch Planer Review

I used a friend's Porter-Cable Model 367 power plane and quickly began to wonder how I got along without a power plane for so many years. I thought I'd get the same model Porter-Cable, but it appears Porter-Cable replaced it with another model. Further, all the reviews I read about Porter-Cable power planes in Amazon.com left me somewhat confused so I thought I'd try Makita, a brand with which I've had good success. I went for the 4 3/8" model because I could true a built-up beam in one pass. When I got the Makita I first noticed the weight difference between it and the Porter-Cable. The Makita is heavier and at first blush seemed better suited for a shop rather than a jobsite (one must always keep in mind bigger might not be better). The next thing I noticed is the drive belt on the Makita is not fully enclosed like the one on the Porter-Cable (I nicked my finger with it, and for a brief second I thought it was the blade that nicked me). Finally, the exhaust port on the Makita dumps out the chips (often plentiful) right next to the air intake for the motor (the Porter-Cable has a two door system that lets you vent the chips to either the right or left side). Despite these short comings I really like the Makita. It's way powerful which I believe calls for the extra weight and compared to, say, a Mag 77 worm drive saw it's a fly weight. It's very smooth in part because you're limited to 1/16" cut, the cutter head turns @ 16000 RPM, and my blades don't yet have any nicks in them. For me the bottom line is how much I use a tool, and it's a rare day that I don't press the Makita into service. Compared to no plane there is no comparison. Compared to muscle powered planes, I think you will wonder why it took you so long to power up. Compared to other powerplanes, well let's say the Makita's flaws are evident (are you listening, Makita), but it's still a way useful tool.
