After extensive research over two years and high anxiety over the right unit to purchase, I chose the Cadet NLW408TW. I have a very large living/dining room, almost 600 sf, with cathedral ceilings and one wall with ceiling to floor windows. The space had been heated by radiant heat panel in the ceiling sheet rock. This heat was inefficient and costly to maintain. There would be breaks in the elements and with only one electrician in the entire Seattle area that would service these panels, it costs about $1,000 every time they came out and they were needed almost annually. I decided to replace the heat system, but with what? I own a top floor condo that is all electric, no place to put a heat pump and other condo restrictions affecting just what I could or could not do. I looked for the biggest wall heater I could find. I was interested in the Cadet NLW452TW which has 4500 watts at 240 volts but on further investigation I saw that it was rated at 3350 watts at 208 volts. Our building has 208 volts. I then saw this model, NLW408TW, that was rated 4000 watts at 208 volts and it was the largest I could get by any manufacturer.
The advantages of the old radiant system are total silence and you can put furniture anywhere you want. These advantages are far outweighed by the inefficiency and high maintenance. This unit has a fan which is slightly audible, but much quieter than the forced air furnaces or hot water boilers that I have had in previous homes. There are also space restrictions for placing objectsnear the unit, recommended 12" from the side, 3' from the front. The existing thermostat for the old system was centrally located on an inside wall and had the 208 volts right there. This made a simple drop of about 2 feet to bring the power into the new unit. It works beautifully. Overnight temperature setting dropped the temp to 67 degrees. I turned it up and the room temp was 69 degrees in 1/2 hour. The old system took almost 4 hours to do the same. My fears as to whether or not it could do the job were relieved.
Of course, the outdoor temperatures are upper 30's to low 40's. The real test will come when the temps are in the teens and 20's. If this becomes a problem, I will edit this review.
